BUILDING, A BAWN, ABHAINN
Building, A Bawn, Abhainn is the title of the 20 Credit, Semester 1 ‘Research Skills and Methods course and that is integral to MSc Architecture and Urban Design Programme at ESALA. RSM introduce students to the materials and expertise required to conduct postgraduate research in/on Derry.
Derry (or Londonderry) is a historic, walled city built atop a hill, located between a river and a peat bog at the edge of Britain and Ireland/EU. The city is known by various names, including Daire or Doire, the Irish Gaelic terms for "oak-grove" or "island in a bog.
Starting with an inscription in St Columb’s Cathedral, we seek to explore the city's multiple identities by conducting surveys that encompass its walls, architecture, and surrounding landscapes. These surveys will utilize on-site measurements, maps, photos, archival documents, and key literature on Derry. The goal is for students to produce "thicker soundings," or detailed section-transects of Daire, that capture both empirical and phenomenological aspects of the city.
Using the surveying methods students will analyze and draw Derry to uncover a deeper sociological understanding of the city's relationship with its region. This approach aims to reveal how drawing and text can narrate and translate the various communities within Derry, offering new perspectives on citizenship and networks of agency to reimagine the city.
Course Organisers: Dr Killian O’ Dochartaigh & Dr. Dorian Wiszniewski
Course Tutors: Paul Pattinson, Leo Xian and Dr Mark Hilley
