UPPLAND

'Uppland' is an essay film (30mins), made in collaboration with Director Edward Lawrenson, that explores the invisible, beyond the colonial frame, using memory, voice and absence to reveal the present deprivations of Yekepa, an abandoned mining town in Liberia.

‘Uppland is a short documentary that offers an alternative filmic framework for analyzing and interpreting the architectural agency of colonialism.....The review committee lauded the filmmakers for their acute observations of the conflicts between our scholarly interpretations of architecture and the self-developed narratives of communities occupying the same space.’

SAH Film and Video Award Citation 2021

Uppland avoids most of the pitfalls of the narrated, exploitation documentary genre, its disembodied voice-over never becoming too authoritative, outraged, or self-indulgent—a rare achievement in this ever-expanding field.’

Africa is a Country

There’s a tension in Uppland between a visual method seeking to uncover some topographical essence and an editorial awareness of how easy it can be to overdo it..’

‘..unearths some of the material strata and spectral traces still present in the manufactured landscapes and architectures of the recent past’
