THE UNIVERSITY OF EXTRA DERRY




Since 2022, we have been studying the ecosophic, linguistic, precolonial, and transborder landscapes of Doire/Daire/Derry (meaning the Oak Grove) for the possibilities of a New cross border University. This studio runs parallel to and complements the ongoing efforts of the ‘Derry University Group,’ a local group advocating for an independent, cross-border university. This initiative sustains the call made by civil rights movement leader, teacher, and architect of the Northern Ireland peace process, John Hume, in 1963.

Starting with Derry’s literature and cartographies that chart its troubled history, we ask students how to reshape a land marked by loss and project a story of resilience and hope. Through iterative visual and material experimentation, both digital and analogue, students develop transcalar propositions connecting the body, building, and landscape.

The MSc in Architectural and Urban Design (AUD) is a one-year postgraduate Master’s programme at ESALA that provides specialist training in urban design for candidates who already hold an architectural degree.
